NEEDED: Members Volunteering for Social Committee
All,
My three year term as social chair for WRYC is coming to a close at the start of the new year. The past three years brought many events, fun, and a baby to WRYC! Alas, my cup has runneth over, and need a replacement for my spot on the board.
My time as social chair taught me one major thing—this particular position needs a village, not a sole hero. Our club is run on volunteers—I know many of you have served your time over the years, and I appreciate your efforts. We need to have newer members with fresh ideas and drive to continue to make this club fun! I am proposing a Social Committee—one member of the committee can be a voting member of the board, but the idea is to have numerous people to help plan events, strong-arm some volunteers, and execute events at the club to prevent burnout, and introduce newer faces.
The social committee members would not have to attend or work every single event, but rather be able to assist hosts of events, gather volunteers, and support the events that happen at WRYC.
If you are interested in being one of many of the committee, please reach out to Autumn (bariautumn@gmail.com) or the WRYC email, wareriveryc@gmail.com. Thank you!
Game Night Success!
Thank you to all who participated in the potluck and game night—so much food and fun was had by all!
Social Reminder
A friendly reminder: Social event fees are kept as low as possible. WRYC does not make money on Socials. Therefore, Member pricing is for the WRYC Member(s) and their Member family household. All Guests and visiting family members are welcome to attend Socials at the Non-member price. Thank you!
Our Socials are all facilitated by Member Volunteers. Please consider Hosting a Social with fellow Members.

The club has been very busy getting ready for the 60th Virginia Governor’s Cup. Special thanks to Jim Garrett, Scott Titus, and Joe Morgan for getting the regatta together. There are a lot of people working behind the scenes as well getting the meals sorted, programs made, and getting the grounds ready, they have all been amazing!
The Board looked over the House Rules and decided to make some minor changes. The updated rules have been sent out. These updates clarify existing rules. One of the updates was to answer the frequently asked question of whether members have access to the club during rentals. The short answer is yes, you are free to use the ramp, dock, and access the boats. However, be respectful of the renters and let their special day go off without a hitch.
There are some upcoming events including Labor Day, details about that will be sent out by the social chair. The Oktoberfest is in the planning phase as well. Mark your calendars for October 5 and invite your friends. Rene and Marcus are making a special trip from Germany again this year to put it on for us.
The socials are always a fun time, but remember they can only happen with your help! If you would like to get involved with socials, let Autumn know at bariautumn@gmail.com.
Please go use and enjoy the club!

We’re already at the Fourth of July! I’ve always been very proud to be from this region around this time of year due to the momentous events that took place within a short distance from the Club. I’m sure you could hear the siege of Yorktown from the dock, if there were a dock in 1781 that is.
On May 6th of 1776, the Virginia House of Burgesses meeting at the Capitol in Williamsburg dissolved itself and reconvened at the Raleigh Tavern as the Fifth Virginia Convention. On May 15th, the members declared that all ties that the British Crown had Virginia were “totally dissolved”. They then instructed Richard Henry Lee to move for independence at the Continental Congress in Philadelphia using the phrase “these colonies are, and of right ought to be, free and independent states!” Of course, six years later, the victory at Yorktown secured that independence.
The whole reason for the holiday mostly happened within just a few miles of the Club. That is your history lesson for this month.
That being said, there is no 4th of July Social this year, socials can only happen with volunteers to your help, and this year there just wasn’t enough interest. There are some important events coming up, most notably is the 50th Virginia Governor’s Cup. There has been a lot of planning and work that has gone into it, come out to show your support on the first weekend in August!
The Board of Directors has updated the House Rules, there are no major changes, mostly just clarifying some language. The updated rules will be sent out shortly. As a reminder, the Board meetings are open to everyone.
I hope everyone has a great 4th, and remember to come out and use the Club, it is yours after all!
